Temptation – (Trifecta Week 113)

I thought I’d try something new this week and submit an entry for the Trifecta weekly flash fiction challenge. This week, the goal was to write a story of exactly 33 words using this word and definition:

worm –  to obtain or extract by artful or insidious questioning or by pleading, asking, or persuading —usually used with out of<finally wormed the truth out of him>

Here’s my entry:

Temptation

The spot will not out.

“My sin is washed away.”

How great your transformation!

“No — the worst sinner.”

Hypocrite!

“I’m crucified, resurrected.”

Screwtape hissed. He would worm out a lie from this saint.

  1. Nice subject for this prompt – the word does lend itself to a kind of sinister perspective, doesn’t it? Great job, and welcome to Trifecta!

    • Thanks! I’m trying to get in the rhythm of writing a longer work I’ve been putting off for some time, so Trifecta was a nice, easy side project to get a burst of random creativity out.

I wanted to “worm out a lie,” since it seemed worming out the truth was sort of the normal thing to do, and this idea came out pretty naturally after that. (Though it’s by far the shortest story I’ve ever attempted!)

  2. This is a clever response to the prompt. I love that you tried out your shortest story ever with us. Thanks for linking up.
